The Trust Martínez Guerricabeitia of the University of Valencia General Foundation, through the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture and Equality, presents the catalogue of the exhibition “Mundo B” (“World B”) by Mavi Escamilla, at Aula Magna of the Cultural Centre La Nau (calle Universidad, 2), on Tuesday 14th July, at 19:30h.
The event will have the interventions of the vice-principal for Culture and Equality, Antonio Ariño; of the director of the Activities Trust, José Pedro Martínez; and of the artist, Mavi Escamilla, as well as the presence of the painter Ángel Mateo Charris and of the critic Johanna Caplliure, who participated in the elaboration of the texts to the publication, designed by the studio Mundo B Collage-no.
“Mundo B” by Mavi Escamilla is, fundamentally, a retrospective of the work produced by the Valencian artist between the years 2007 and 2010, and can be visited in the room Martínez Guerricabeitia of the historical building of Universitat de València until the next 27th September.
The catalogue now presented breaks with the dynamics of the series “Trobades amb la Col·lecció Marínez Gerricabeitia” (“Meetings with the Collection Martínez Gerricabeitia”) and responds to a unique design conceived since the start of the creation of “Mundo B” by Mavi Escamilla. “I already had in my mind the catalogue before starting the edition. I wanted it to be an object that served to capture from the get-go the spirit of the exposure. This is why its format reminds us very much to a Bible: the purpose is to specify what is the world B”, explains the artist.
It has a hard-cover, is covered in satin with engravings in gold and 120 pages in gold and red plated couché paper, the catalogue designed by the studio Collage-no, under the supervision of Escamilla, takes an elegant, visual and very intuitive tour around the work of the artist. “College-no has given the identity I wanted to the catalogue, the one I had in my mind”, she states.
The publication starts with an introduction of the Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust where it is argued how the work of Mavi Escamilla perfectly fits within the movement of social critique and committed art of the Collection. “Escamilla profits from the same tricks and images that society produces to give them back by throwing them to their faces as an insult, a broadside”, said the text.
The main texts have been managed by Ángel Mateo Charris and Johanna Caplliure. “Charris is a lifelong friend of mine, we studied together and I knew that his narration would be the friendly face of the catalogue. In relation to Johanna Caplliure, she was the one who introduced me to Martínez Guerricabeitia Biennial and who knows very deeply my work”, explains Mavi Escamilla.
In fact, the text of Charris is the account of a love story, which contributes a literary turn to the graphic, artistic, and editorial work achieved in “Mundo B” by Escamilla in her exposure and by Collage-no in the catalogue.
Caplliure, in fact, preferred focusing on the artistic production of Mavi Escamilla. Her work, she says, “seems to be placed in an existential pessimism where ‘Mundo B’ could be understood as the end to which the violence of life heads for, that is, death.” Despite the academic importance of the art criticism, neither of both bet for the historicist story within the catalogue of the world B of Escamilla. It is rather the contrary. Charris and Caplliure have coincided in shaping their reflections as if they were a novel.
In relation to the works’ catalogue, the artist wanted to “leave proof of the exposure that has been exhibited in the room Martínez Guerricabeitia in La Nau”, and for this reason is presented with photographs of the room, through which it is possible to see the proportion of each one of the works: approximately fifty pieces among paintings, made on India ink with reserve mask and crayons, and drawings in pencil, with measures that vary between 50x50 and 190x190 centimetres; as well as some porcelain pieces, a micro-installation, and the ‘ready made’ “Mi corazón te pertenece” (“My heart belongs to you”). The last ones are works carried out in 2015 that take Escamilla’s speech beyond the painting.
“Mundo B” by Mavi Escamilla is an exposure organised by Universitat de València, through the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture and Equality; by the General Foundation of Universitat de València, through Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust; and by the Cultural Centre La Nau; with the collaboration of Banco Santander and Heineken Spain.
