
The young researchers of the Institute of Corpuscular Physics IFIC (UV-CSIC) Alberto Aparici and Miguel Villaplana have won the II Innovative Opinion Awards announced by the Chair for Scientific Dissemination UCC+I of the University of Valencia, with the support of the daily newspaper “Las Provincias” and within the framework of the ‘Conference on Research’ at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, in which more than 400 students have participated. The dean, Federico Pallardó, and the chief editor of the daily newspaper, Pablo Salazar, have presented the awards on February 15th, which consist of a 200 euro cash prize and the publication of the winning work on Las Provincias.

Alberto Aparici has won the prize in the category of Social and human sciences and education programmes with the article entitled ‘La ciencia también es cultura’ (Science is also culture), whereas Miguel Villaplana was successful in the category Basic Sciences, Health Sciences, engineering and architecture, with the work ‘Un juego de niños’ (A child’s play). Furthermore, the verdict included the special mention to the researcher Ana Primo (ITQ-UPV) for her text ‘Transformación de un residuo en el material del futuro: del quitosano al frafeno’, originally conceived as a tribute to his grandfather, the scientist Eduardo Primo Yúfera. In all, 25 projects from at least ten universities and research centres were submitted to this second edition of the Innovative Opinion Awards. The competition panel was composed by the Press Office coordinator of the University of Valencia, Francesc Bayarri, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Federico Pallardó and the Chief Editor of “Las Provincias”, Pablo Salazar.
Regarding the awards for the 'Conference on Research 2012/2013', the winners were: Irene Esteve and Diana Castro (first year), Carlos de Andrés David (second) and Juan José Delgado Moraleja (third). On the other hand, Daniel Tomàs Crespo Balaguer, Rocío González Martínez and Jaime Salvador García –from first to third year– received the awards for Best Poster. The awards, presented by Pallardó, were sponsored by the Hospital Clínico Research Institute and the University of Valencia, IIS-La Fe and Editorial Panamericana.
COMMITMENT TO THE TRANSFER OF KWNOWLEDGE
The Chair for Scientific Dissemination UCC+i of the University of Valencia has participated in the organization of the conference held on Friday aimed at the scientific communication. The journal Mètode has also collaborated in this activity. The conference was inaugurated by the professor emeritus of Botany Manuel Costa. Some of the participants were Carlos Romà Mateo (co-organiser of the conference), the scientist Enrique Royuela, of Feelsynapsis, the journalist Miquel Calvet, person responsible for communications for the Biomedical Research Centre of Rare Disease Network (CIBERER), José Miguel Mulet, José Antonio López Guerrero (researchers and collaborators of the Naukas dissemination website) and José Manuel López Nicolás. Other scientific dissemination platforms were also presented, for instance Hablando de ciencia, Mappingingnorance or Piratas de la ciencia – said Eva Pastor, person responsible for culture and communications for the Botanical Garden – as well as blogs, as was the case of the blog called Falsable of the researcher Moisés García-Arencibia.
ISABEL FARIÑAS CLOSES THE CONFERENCE
The Conference on Research 2012/2013 of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry concluded on Friday 15th February with the celebration of a round-table on the dangers of pseudoscience and the closing conference ‘La comprensión de nosotros mismos en la era de la evolución celular’, by Isabel Fariñas, Professor of Cellular Biology at the University of Valencia and Director of the Molecular Neurobiology Unit.
