The Universitat de València and Argentina promote the research in water management

The signing authorities of the cooperation agreement between the Universitat de València and Argentina.

The principal of the Universitat de València, Esteban Morcillo, and the general superintendent of irrigation of Mendoza (Argentina), José Luis Álvarez, have signed a cooperation agreement in the field of the management of water resources to strengthen the academic and research activities in this area.

The  work agenda involves dealing together with research programmes in areas considered of common interest within the field of the integrated water resources management.

The Water Economy Group (GEA) of the Universitat de València, run by professor Francesc Hernández, will be the responsible of developing the specific activities and agreements contained in the call. It seeks to promote the interchange of experiences and the assessment in topics related to the efficiency in the management and the viability of projects in the water field. The dissemination of specialised training programmes in the water resources management and, specially, the official master’s degree in Water Resources Management of the Universitat de València will be specially supported by the authorities of the Irrigation General Department (DGI) to promote the incorporation of Argentinian students. Within the agreement it is included the organisation of conferences, seminars, training and professional specialisation courses that will make easier the interchange of students and researchers between both institutions.

This call supposes an example of the growing international projection of the Universitat de València in the field of source management to which GEA is actively contributing. This research group is part of the VLC/CAMPUS International Campus of Excellence that the Universitat de València, the Universitat Politècnica de València, and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) constitute. Its research experience fundamentally focuses on the optimisation of water treatment technologies, analysis of the efficiency in the water resources management, studies of the economic and environmental viability for re-use projects, technical and economic efficiency in urban water systems, financing of facilities, price analysis, and indicator design of financial, social and environmental profitability associated to investment proposals in the field of water.

The GEA has participated in a high number of studies at the request of national (Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar, Ministry of the Environment, Generalitat Valenciana) and international (United Nations Environment Programme - UNEP, Food and Agriculture Organization - FAO) institutions. It has collaboration agreements with a great number of relevant international institutions within the field of water such as the University of California-Riverside (USA), University of Catania (Italy), University of Sydney (Australia), and the National Water Authority (Peru). At the same time, the professor Francesc Hernández, responsible of GEA, leads the Water Economics Working Group within the International Water Association (IWA).
