The University’s chair on Popularization of Science (Càtedra de Divulgació de la Ciència) launches the 13th edition of the Science and Technology Eurpean Week, which aims at promoting the scientific culture within the society and especially the scientific vocation among young people. This year’s schedule -available at www.uv.es/cdciencia- is made up of a hundred activities and is sponsored by the Spanish foundation for the Science and Technology from the Spanish ministry for Science and Innovation, as well as by the bank Caja Mediterráneo (CAM).
“Science, your future” is one of the most important actions of the Science Week, which plans to receive more than 5,000 young people. To the end of December, about 40 lectures will be given by scientists from the Universitat de València, the CSIC, and the Universitat d’Alacant. The lectures are on several scientific areas and are taking place at secondary education centres, which at the same time are celebrating their own science weeks.
Along with the chair for the Popularization of Science, the unit for the Scientific Culture of the FECYT (the Spanish foundation for Science and Technology) has organized almost 50 Maths tours around Valencia, with three different routes and with professional guides. This way, the city becomes a place to learn Maths in a more appealing way. Both this activities and the Astronomy, Geology and Maths workshops are aimed to promote the study of the basic sciences.
Targeted for the secondary education students as well, the chair for the Popularization of Science is organizing the 3rd edition of the literary Prize Llegir sense Fronteres, with the assistance of the newspapers Levante-EMV and Información, and Fundació Bromera for the promotion of reading. The goal is to encourage students to read, research and increase creativity. Deadline to submit papers is the 23rd December.
The Science and Technology Week promotes other activities aimed to different audiences. For instance, for a wide audience, there are some conferences taking place at the Science Week of Algemesí, as well as at the lectures scheduled in the event of the literary prizes Ciutat d’Alzira. Within this context, the Universitat de València is going to award the XII Premi Europeu de Divulgació Científica Estudi general (Europan prize for the science outreach), which is financed by Bancaixa with 18,000 euros. The above mentioned chair also organizes this month Bars de Ciència, at the cultural centre Octubre. At the same time, for university students, the X edition of an illustration course (X Curs d’Ilustració) is going to be tought by Carles Puche from the 29th November.
Aimed to secondary education teachers, there will be a scientific refresher conference named X Matinal d’Evolució: “El llarg viatje de l’espècie humana”. The conference is going to take place on next 19th November and registration is still available.
Finally, children will be able to enjoy the science week by attending to the Festa per la Ciència (Party for the Science) at the Valencia`s Jardí Botànic, where several activities such as games and workshops will take place, focusing on to this year’s two international celebrations: the International Year of Forests and the International Year of Chemistry.
