Universitat de València’s La Nau cultural centre hosted the photojournalism international festival in Valencia for the second time, PhotOn Festival. This festival gathered, from May 21 to 26, the most outstanding figures in photojournalism. Other spaces in the city, as the IVAM museum, Mercado Central and Sala Lametro collaborated too. This year, the winner picture of World Press Photo 2012, which is the most important competition in this field, was shown.
An exhibition at La Nau is having this photograph by the Catalán Samuel Aranda. A womain in the Islamic veil, Fatima Al-Qawas, is reassuring her son who has been injured in Yemen, among other pictures were shown. Aranda and Manuel P. Barriopedro are the only Spanish to win the most important photojournalism award. Barriopedro was awarded in 1982 thanks to his picture of lieutenant colonel Tejero in the Spanish Congress of Deputies during the coup d’état.
Apart from the four exhibitions in La Nau’s Claustro, this building also hosted some workshops, a documentary cinema cycle and a seminar to meet the photojournalists, who will explain their experiences. Entrance was free and limited to space.

This year’s ethical commitment: Jon Sistiaga. The city of Valencia has many photojournalism professionals who have something to say about the value of photography as a vehicle for social change. That is the reason for this contest, which also has a space to reflect on the ethics of the profession. The journalist Jon Sistiaga (Saturday, May 26th, at 19:30 is taking place in a round table in La Nau’s Sala Thesaurus), and last year’s this section had Enrique Meneses. The festival is awarding an annual grant to a photographer in the beginning of his/her career so that he/she could exhibit his/her work next to the outstanding figures. This year, Miguel Candela, the winner of the past edition, showed his work.
Finally, La Nau cultural centre is having, along with the PhotOn Festival, the Fragments 2012 exhibition, which is the annual photo showing organized by Universitat de València and Unió de Periodistes Valencians. All the works here exhibited are by Valencian journalists. The exhibition is going to be open until June the 3rd.
