
For more than a decade, the Universitat de València and the Consejo Superior de Deportes, with the collaboration of the Physical Education and Sports Service, is granting some top-class athletes to help them to combine their sports careers and their university studies. This year, 119 athletes studying at the university are part of the programme.
One of these athletes is Miguel Ángel Sancho, studying Psychology at the university, who won a silver medal in the last Campeonato de España Universitario de atletismo. He also has a bronze medal in the last European competition and is one of the nine Valencian students who represented the Universitat during the last edition of Universiada last summer. The judoka Ana Carrascosa is studying Physical Education teaching. She won an olympic diploma in Beijing. She and his collegue Miguel Ángel are enjoying ADO grant, which aims at promoting the top-class Spanish athletes at an olympic level.
Mónica Merenciano, who participated in the Beijing Paralympic Games and who is studying Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, won a bronze medal. She is part of ADOP programme, which supports disabled athletes in their training for the Olympic Games. Nilza Karina Dos Santos, studying Economy, obtained a bronze medal in the teams modality in the last Campeonato de España Universitario de Taekwondo. She also participated in the Campeonato del Mundo Universitario. She has been European champion and she may opt for the Olympic Games in London.
Then, Aratxa Martínez and Estela Benita, both studying Journalism, participated in the last Universiada and Campeonato del Mundo Universitario, for gymnastics and karate.
The list includes Universitat de València’s students who have participated in Universiada, Campeonato del Mundo Universitario and Campeonato de España Universitario as Pablo Montoro. The paralympic athletes, who participate in the Programa de Deporte Adaptado of Fundación Divina Pastora, are also part of this programme.
This year, almost 50,000 Euros will be granted to these top-class athletes. The Universitat, which is granting the most part of that amount, is also offering registration fees for some granted athletes.
Apart from the economic grants, free registration fees and teaching assistance, all the students granted can have free courses by the Physical Education and Sports Service.
This university programme for top-class athletes establishes up to four different standards to assess the performance of applicants. Students must prove good sports resuls but also eligible academic results. Depending on these different economic grants are established.
