From 16 to 26 July, Universitat de València’s Aula de Cinema organizes the fifth edition of ‘Nits de Cinema’. These evening showings (22:00), which are displayed in the open air and for free, move to Centre del Carme (C/ Museo, 2) due to the rehabilitation works being conducted in La Nau’s cloister. This activity mixes together some films in two cycles: ‘Rock’n cinema’ and ‘50 anys sense Marilyn’.
The first cycle goes over the different portraits of rock music and its main actors through the formats of documentary, fiction, fake documentary, and concert-films. The second one stems from the collaboration of the Universitat de València’s Aula de Cinema and La Filmoteca del IVAC in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death.
The sessions will follow the usual structure of Aula de Cinema’s programmes, that means, free entrace and a previous presentation of the film. After each showing, there will be a debate with the public.
Today, July 16th, the showings of Rock’n cinema start with El barrio contra mí, which has Elvis Presley as its principal actor. On Tuesday, July 17th, is the turn of One pus one, by Jean-Luc Godard, 1968. This is a reference documentary regarding the cultural change undergone in May 1968. Then, on July 19th, there will be a film-concert, The Dub Room Special! (1982), featuring Frank Zappa. On July 21st, comedy will take place with the fake documentary This is Spinal Tap (Rob Reiner, 1984), which parodies the rock stars and the films praising them. On Monday July 23rd, La mugre y la furia (2000) will be screened, a film by Julien Temple focused on the Sex Pistols. 24 Hour Party People will be shown on Wedenesday 25th, a film by Michael Winterbottom (2002) set in the 70s in Manchester. Finally, I’m not here (Todd Haynes, 2007), a Bob Dylan’s unconventional biopic, is closing the cycle.
The second cycle, 50 anys sense Marylin, Aula de Cinema and La Filmoteca del IVAC celebrate the 50 anniversary of Marylin’s death. This way, an almost complet review of the actress’ filmography will be done. On Wednesday July 18th, the film Cuatro páginas de la vida (O. Henry’s Full House, Henry Hathaway, Howard Hawks, Henry King, Henry Koster, Jean Negulesco, 1952) will be shown. It is one of the first works of Marilyn in the cinema. El príncipe y la corista (Laurence Olivier, 1957) will be screened on Friday 20th and on Sunday 22nd Cómo casarse con un millonario, by Jean Negulesco, 1953. The last film will be Niebla en el alma by Roy Baker, 1952. The cycle continues in Filmoteca d’Estiu, from 27th July to 1st September at Jardines del Túria. This activity is finishing in September at Rialto building, the headquarters of La Filmoteca del IVAC, with a review of the actress’ filmography.
On Thursday 19th, on the occasion of the showing of The Dub Room Special!, the number 14 of L’Atalante. Revista de estudios cinematográficos will be presented at 22:00. Manuel de la Fuente, the coordinator of the monograph ‘Cine y Rock’ of this numbe, is going to present the film. Previously, at 20:00, a presentation of the journal at La Casa del Libro by Rebeca Romero, Manuel de la Fuente and Marta Martín Núñez, is also scheduled.
