The Universitat de València’s principal inaugurates the 2011-2012 academic year at Ontinyent

Esteban Morcillo, the University of Valencia's principal inaugurated the 2011-2012 academic year at the university extension in Ontinyent. Fernando Delgado, writer and journalist, gave the opening speech titled “Mala educación y crisis” (rudeness and crisis), which talks about the relation between people’s education throughout their lives and their capacity to solve conflicts. Jorge Rodríguez, Ontinyent’s mayor, and Rafael Soriano, president of the bank Caixa Ontinyent, were also present in the opening ceremony.

During his speech, the principal reaffirmed the existing commitment between the university and the town of Ontinyent. “This commitment materializes through the existence of the foundation Fundació Universitària de la Vall d’Albaida as well as the other organizations that make it come true. They work side by side with the university to improve our presence in this town. Ontinyent isn’t just a university town because of this, it has a strong vocation and it is committed to science and progress as well", he said.

The principal, who thinks that universities are important to end the financial crisis because of their role in creating science and knowledge, affirmed that the Universitat de València pledges its commitment to keep and increase the number of studies at the university extension in Ontinyent.

Before the opening, the university’s principal and the mayor agreed on the transfer of the land where the future facilities of the Ontinyent campus will be, at the former building of the school Luís Vives. “This building adapts to the teaching needs in Ontinyent. Some officers will be built, including a library and a conference hall along with some administration offices”, he explained.
