The Universitat invests tomorrow, Friday, the sociologist Saskia Sassen and the philologist Josep Massot as Doctors Honoris Causa

The Universitat de València invests on Friday, 15 April, the sociologist Saskia Sassen and the philologist Josep Massot as Doctors Honoris Causa. The event will start at 12 hours, at the Paranimf of the historic building of La Nau. The laudation of Saskia Sassen will be read by the full university professor of Sociology and vice-principal for Culture, Antonio Ariño. The one for Josep Massot, will be read by the full university professor of Catalan Philology, Vicent Simbor.

Saskia Sassen

Saskia Sassen (La Haya, 1947) is Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology at Columbia Unviersity, where she leads its Committee of global thinking. She studied at the universities of Poitiers, Buenos Aires and the Università degli Studi di Roma, she got her PhD at the University of Notre Dame (United States). She has been visiting professor in several institutions, among them the American Bar Foundation, the Russell Sage Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the universities of Bielefeld (Germany) and Toronto (Canada).

Her researches are focused on the study of cities, immigration, global economy and its effects, paying particular attention to the dimension of genre, inequality and the impact of digitalisation. Her wide work has been translated into more than twenty languages. She has received several awards, among them the Prince of Asturias Awards of Social Sciences.

Josep Massot
Josep Massot i Muntaner (Palma de Mallorca, 1941) is director of the Publicacions de l’Abadia de Montserrat (L’Abadia de Montserrat Publications), president of the history and archaeology section of the Institute for Catalan Studies and secretary of the Royal Academy of Belles Lettres of Barcelona, as well as responsible for the publication service of the International Association of Catalan Language and Literature.

Graduated in Romanic Philology at the University of Barcelona, he is the director of the magazines Serra d’Or and Randa. Founder of the Societat Catalana de Llengua i Literatura (Catalan Society for Language and Literature) and of the magazine Llengua & Literatura, her extensive work of more than eighty books that has established him as a humanist scholar. He has received several recognition, among which the Creu de Sant Jordi Award of the Government of Catalonia, Medalla d’Or del Consell de Mallorca (Golden Medal of the Consell de Mallorca) and Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (Catalan Literary Lifetime Achievement Award).
