The exhibition shows a selection of more than 200 pieces of medical scientific collection of the University of Valencia and also assumed the presentation of a new exhibition of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, specially designed for research and teaching . The public will analyze the development of contemporary medicine, including for example, information relating to the cholera epidemic that hit Valencia in 1885 and the first mass vaccination of this bacterial disease carried out in our city, by the Ferran Jaume doctor. This collection started in the mid-seventies through the work of Professor José María López Piñero. The modest initial core consisted of the few objects and instruments that could meet the Faculty. As time grew, largely by private donations and selfless institutions.
The intention of Professor López Piñero, when creating the collection, apart from safeguarding the heritage, was to equate with the best institutes of European Medicine History of that time. In almost all of them had in mind the material and iconographic sources, apart from the printed file, the oral transmission and direct observation. Therefore, the initial idea was to create a collection that would serve both for teaching and for research. In the current situation of deep crisis and change of values, many of these institutional collections, "exemplary in their time are dead, about to die, or held under minimal", according to the curators of the exhibition. Hence the importance of the University of Valencia bet on a different solution, open to students, researchers and the general public knowledge of its outstanding equity.
The materials presented are intended to show a selection of heritage science and medical, on the one hand, and illustrate the major milestones of medicine Valencia and its School of Medicine, on the other. The two great traditions are Valencian morphology and therapeutics. So, the exhibition begins with the first, which refers to vesaliano movement in our city, the Atlas of Crisostomo Martinez, the work begun by Gomez Alamá and work of Santiago Ramón y Cajal in Valencia.
