The University of Valencia has delivered its Medal to the Philharmonic Society of Valencia. The event included an extraordinary concert, within the programming of the Philharmonic Society, which counted on the participation of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Valencia and pianist Sergio Sapena, directed by Hilari García Gázquez. The sessions have been at the Palau de la Música.
During the concert, works by Shostakóvich and Stravinsky have been performed.
The Philharmonic Society of Valencia was founded in 1912 with the purpose to present a stable programming of concerts in the city of Valencia. Throughout the years, the Society has preserved its initial spirit and has relied on the impressive collaboration of artistic groups, symphony orchestras and a series of artists, among which are Artur Rubinstein; Vladimir Horowitz; George Piatigorsky; the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, under the direction of Clemens Krauss; Montserrat Caballé; Renata Scotto; Ileana Cotrubas; Samuel Ramey; Hermann Prey; Marilyn Horne; Victoria de los Ángeles; Christa Ludwig; Frederica von Stade; Ofelia Sala, Ivo Pogorelich; Joaquín Achúcarro; Daniel Barenboim, and Katrin Scholz,among many others.
For a hundred years, the Society has been the platform for the launching of new Valencian performers, such as José Iturbi.
