University Specialists share their knowledge about wine culture in Requena

The Office of the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Participation of the University of Valencia, the Regional Government of Valencia and the City Council of Requena have organised the conference “wine ulture. Contributions to education and training”, held today, Thursday September 26, at the Palau del Cid. Professors Juan Piqueras, María Isabel Pardo and Miquel Francés will reflect around one of the most important assests of Requena's economy: viticulture.

This is a forum for dialogue where wine culture will be analyzed from the economic, scientific and communicative standpoint. Viticulture has become an important component of rural development and regional promotion, so other teachers of the University of Valencia will try to provide the people of Requena keys to generate economic dynamism and social cohesion.

Jorge Hermosilla, Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Participation; Javier Berasaluce, Mayor of Requena, and Oreto Segura, regional delegate of Education, inaugurated the day. Behind them, Ramon Lopez, Department of Comparative Education and History of Education, will present lectures.

First, the professor of geography Juan Piqueras, born on earth (Field Arcís, Requena), will examine the possibilities and economic alternatives of wine and culture. His research career in the field wine dates back to the eighties, when he published his doctoral thesis 'The vine and wine in the Valencia'. This faculty of the University share with presents its proven experience: in 1984 he received the National Award for Agricultural Publications of the Ministry of Agriculture for his book 'The export Valencian agriculture', and a year later I Pascual Carrión Award for 'The Valencia viticulture to the EEC and the world market '. Specialist Regional Geography, Historical and Economic Juan Piqueras has published over twenty books and nearly one hundred articles.

Maria Isabel Pardo, Department of Microbiology and Ecology, will be the second speaker of the day. The professor will focus her speech in microbiology winemaking, and she will try to value science as the foundation of the culture of wine. Pardo is a professor of the University of Valencia since 1987 when she published her thesis entitled 'Study of the microflora present in musts and wines of the DO Utiel-Requena '. Her research has focused on the study of wine microorganisms. She has participated in eighteen national projects and European research and has published more than forty articles in international journals, and many others in Spanish journals of winemaking area.

Finally, Miquel Francés, Department of Languages ​​and Theory of Communication Sciences, will give a presentation on communication, heritage and culture of wine. Francés is Professor of Communication Studies at the University, director of the Master in Audiovisual Contents and Formats Workshop and responsible Audiovisual University of Valencia. Today is also the coordinator of the Audiovisual Services Spanish Universities. He has been head of production of numerous popular science documentaries and educational videos, as 'Territory Winemaking'.

 

With this conference, the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Participation contributes to value economic opportunities unique to each area, show the potential of the university research community to Valencian local society and provide training and transfer citizenship knowledge in areas representative of its territory.
