The Department of Preventive Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Valencia organizes the 1st Conferences of Research in Omic Sciences and Lifestyle, Jicova, with the intention of providing knowledge and to disseminate biology, medicine and biotechnologies applied to cellular knowledge. The conferences will be held from 11 to 13 June.
Omics are a set of techniques based on the analysis of the whole, instead of analysing part by part. Thus, it is aimed to create a new discipline, the omic sciences, which comprehend different scientific branches. With this omic spirit, has been created the conferences programme, a range of lectures related to diverse areas of knowledge.
The keynote speech of the opening session will be led by José María Ordovás, world leader in the studies of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics. Ordovas has stood out for being one of the pioneers in the study of the interaction gen-diet. He is professor at the University of Tufts (Boston), and member of the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies and researcher of the National Centre of Cardiovascular Researches. The lecture will take place at the Auditorium of the University of Valencia and the general public can attend it.
After this keynote speech, a tribute to the Professor Ángel Pellicer Garrido will take place, who graduated in Medicine and Surgery by the University of Valencia, for his important research and professional career. Currently he holds the position of Director of the laboratory on molecular mechanisms of cancer of the Department of Pathology of the University of New York.
From the second lecture on, the conferences will be moved to the Salon Degrees of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University. Between the second and third day of the conferences we will meet other researchers of national and international prestige, who will participate in lectures such as ‘El repte de traslladar resultats d’investigacions a la societat’ (The challenge of transferring research results to society), ‘La dieta mediterrània: La millor arma per a combatre les malalties cardiovasculars’ (The Mediterranean diet: the best weapon to fight against cardiovascular diseases) or ‘Les cèl·lules mare són capaces de reparar allò que és irreparable al cervell?’. (Are stem cells able to repair the irreparable in the brain?).
The conferences are addressed to all audiences, from professionals to researchers and students, and also to the general public, as the directors of Jicova, Vicente Zanón and Carolina Ortega said “we think that the fact of showing the different disciplines included in the Omic Sciences and its relation with Lifestyle can create in the audience not only knowledge, but also a reflection, and this reflection can lead to innovative ideas”.
The directors claimed that to find collaborators has not been easy, but that thanks to the University of Valencia, to CIBERobn, and other companies, these first conferences, JICOVA, are now a reality.
The registration to the conferences can be made through the website http://jicova.com where you can also get more information about the lecturers and the researches of the conferences.
