
Researchers of the University of Valencia have participated in the creation of the Institut Superior de Recerca Cooperativa (ISIC) en Aplicacions i Tecnologies Espacials a la Comunitat Valenciana (Cooperative Research Institute in Applications and Space Technologies at the Valencian Country), which constitutes at present an important scientific and business Spanish alliance for space research. The SPACE-CV has also the collaboration of the Consorci Espacial Valencia (VSC) (Valencian Space Consortium) and the European Space Agency (ESA).
In addition to the University of Valencia, the SPACE-CV it’s also part of the Universitat Politècnica of Valencia (that coordinates the project), the CSIC, the University Miguel Hernández of Elx, the University of Alacant, the Technical University of Cartagena, the Technical University of Madrid and the companies Aurora Software and Testing, and EMXYS.
In recent years the number of satellites and their applications have grown exponentially, becoming one of the main supports of the current Information Society and of a wide variety of services of various uses. Among them, for example, radio navigation (GPS and GALILEO systems), remote observation of the Earth (meteorology, natural resource management, climate change) and monitoring of the planet.
In response to this growth, has been created the Institut Superior de Recerca Cooperativa (ISIC) en Aplicacions i Tecnologies Espacials a la Comunitat Valenciana (SPACE-CV) (Cooperative Research Institute for Applications and Space Technologies of the Valencian Country). “Our work is multidisplinary, covering different aspects related to space technology and applications; such as telecommunications and computing, characterization and development of new materials, microwaves and effects of high power, as well as the design and operation of small space platforms for scientific, technological and sustainability missions”, said Vicente Boria, principal researcher of the ISIC.
From its various laboratories, the SPACE-CV works on the development of scientific-technological equipment and high frequency components for space communications; it is also researching on new materials with advanced properties for Space applications, as well as the use of radiofrequency components and microwaves in particles accelerator.
Moreover, one of its lines of development focuses on the designing and placement in orbit of small satellites intended to the realization of scientific experiments for possible medical, biological, pharmaceutical and alimentary applications, as well as for the validation of components and computer equipment, which will be embark in future satellites. In this field of action, from SPACE-CV it develops a useful payload of microwaves to embark in the future satellite of the Universitat Politècnica of Valencia, known as POLITECH1, to facilitate its communications with Earth.
