University Spanish Athletics Championship

Youth and quality in the team that will represent the University in the National Athletics Championship

The Athletics team of the Universitat de València will compete next weekend in the University Spanish Athletics Championship, organised by San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM).

A team formed by 28 athletes will represent the Universitat in the most important national appointment of the academic year. In it the best university athletes of the different disciplines will gather.

The team coached by Rubén Picazo attends the event with last year’s precedent, when they won the bronze medal by universities and a total of nine medals (2 gold medal, 3 silver medal and 4 bronze medals). They are thrilled to compete in almost all the disciplines of the Championship, “we compete with 28 athletes, a very high number, despite we had 10 injured players due to lessions”, said the coach.

Among the athletes selected to compete, we highlight the 2015 Spanish champion, Jorge Gimeno (triple jump) and last year’s medallists, Neus Quiñonero (800m), Ana Polo (hammer throw) and Alberto López (5000m).

To complete the team: Regina Aguirre (400m and 800m), Borja Añon (400m hurdles), Héctor Cabrera (javelin), Raquel Dolz (10 000m), Javier Escrivá (weight), Aina Fornes (400m hurdles), Paula Fuertes (400m hurdles), Ricardo Gaya (triple jump), Jose Ignacio Giménez (5000m), Natalia Gorriz (10000m), Lidia Hernández (10000m), Oscar Adrián López (100m), Roxana Martínez (discus throw), Álvaro Martínez (high jump), Carla Masip (800m and 1500m), Albert Micó (400m), Manel Miralles (pole throw), José Mocholí1 (800m), Iván Muñoz (3000m steeplechase), Pilar Pons (200m), Andrea Salvador (triple jump and long jump), Belén Simarro (high jump), Adrián Sobrino (high jump) and Pau Tormo (10km race walk).

Picazo explains that “despite the injured athletes, I think we present a team of guarantees with the objective of improving the good results of 2015. It is true that most of the medallists of the last season left the team due to the end of their university studies and other athletes won’t be able to participate because of injuries, but new athletes with high quality joined the team and I am convinced that they will perform well at the Murcian track”.
