In Rome, during the summer, decadent noblemen, careerists, politicians, high-flying criminals, journalists, actors, prelates, artists and intellectuals weave a plot of fragile relationships that develop in magnificent palaces and and 

villas. The centre of all meetings is Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo), a 65-year-old writer who wrote only a book and works as a journalist. In the grip of indolence and boredom, he attends to this show of powerful but unsubstantial, 

empty and depressing figures.
