09.15-09.30     Welcome

09.30-10.15     Agustí Camós "Lamarck on 2022"

Lamarck was a great naturalist who has often been misunderstood and misunderstood. We will see the causes that have originated and what were his remarkable contributions to science. We will describe some of the data that allow us to affirm his influence in Spain since the 19th century, as well as his revaluation in the light of recent discoveries, or rediscoveries, that question the most orthodox interpretations of the synthetic theory of evolution.

Agustí Camós holds a degree in biology and a doctorate from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and is a retired professor of Biology and Geology of secondary education. He is the editor of Estudis sobre Antoni de Martí i Franquès (2020), author of La huella de Lamarck en España en el siglo XIX (2021), and of the introduction, notes and translation into Catalan of Lamarck's Philosophie zoologique.

10.30-11.15   Alba Motes-Rodrigo "Animal culture: what is it and where it comes from"

It is said that the secret of the evolutionary success of our species is our cultural capacity. Modern humans depend on skills and knowledge acquired from each other and produce technical advances that are only possible thanks to collective knowledge. Although other animals also have cultures, our technological competence is unique in magnitude and variety. In this presentation we will discuss what culture is, how human culture differs from other animal cultures, how we study cultural variation in different species and what is the evolutionary origin of our cultural dependence.

Alba Motes-Rodrigo is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Ecology and Evolution of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) where she researches on the behavior and social networks of giant otters. He did his doctorate at the University of Tübingen (Germany) where, through experiments with great apes, he investigated the origins of human technology and culture. Before that, he did a master's degree in ethology at the University of Linköping (Sweden) and a degree in biology at the Universitat de València.

11.30-12.15    Pause for coffee

12.15-13.00    Pilar Domingo-Calap "Biological struggle and evolution: viruses, bacteria and humans"

Mutations, changes in the genetic material of organisms, allow the generation of new variants and their adaptation to the environment. Considered one of the main forces that regulate evolution, we will see its implication in the interactions between viruses, bacteria and humans, giving rise to a constant biological struggle.

Pilar Domingo-Calap holds a Doctorate in Biology from the Universitat de València (2012) and is a researcher of the Ramón y Cajal program. She currently leads the Environmental and Biomedical Virology group at the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology I2SysBio (Universitat de València-CSIC mixed center). He leads 10 research projects and has published more than 50 scientific articles in virology and molecular evolution. In addition to basic research, he is dedicated to knowledge transfer and scientific dissemination.

13.15-14.00    Final discussion moderated by Juli Peretó
