INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING THE INTERNATIONAL MENTION OF THE DOCTORAL DEGREE, APPROVED BY THE PERMANENT BOARD OF THE DOCTORAL SCHOOL ON JULY 13TH, 2021

(Modified by agreement of the Doctoral School's Permanent Board on May 3rd, 2022)

  1. The doctorate degree may be awarded an international citation, provided that the following circumstances are met:
    1. During the period of training required to obtain the doctoral degree, the doctoral student has spent a minimum of three months in a higher education institution or prestigious research centre outside Spain, sufficiently accredited and with funding through competitive calls for short stays, during which they have studied or carried out research work. The stay and the activities must have been endorsed by the director and authorised by the doctoral programme's academic committee, and must be included in the doctoral student's activities document. In the event that the doctoral student has applied for funding and this has not been granted, it will be sent to the Doctoral School for approval at least one month before the stay, together with the favourable report from the academic committee, the CV of the person responsible for the stay, that of the director of the receiving team and the work plan for the stay; the documentation must be submitted at least one month before the start of the stay; the stay may not begin without the prior authorisation of the Doctoral School.

In the event that the stay does not have competitive funding, the academic coordination committee of the corresponding doctoral programme must be informed no less than three months prior to the start of the stay. In the case of a stay to be carried out in more than one period, the periods must have a minimum uninterrupted duration of one month and may be split into two periods at the most. In any case, the report must include the planning and justification of all the periods foreseen (duration, activities to be undertaken) to complete a minimum stay of three months. The academic coordination committee of the respective doctoral programme will be responsible for reporting, where appropriate, on the stay, and will inform the Doctoral School, which will have fifteen days to request, if necessary, the appropriate clarifications. The subcommittee of the relevant area of the Doctoral School will issue the mandatory report and authorise the stay, if appropriate. In any case, the application form for the stay must include the CV of the person responsible for the stay, the CV of the director of the receiving team and the work plan for the stay.

    2. Part of the doctoral thesis, at least the abstract and conclusions, must have been written and defended in one of the usual languages for scientific communication in the field of knowledge, other than any of the official languages in Spain, without prejudice to Article 7.2. In this case, the abstract must be at least 15,000 words long. The academic coordination committee of each doctorate programme may request, subject to prior justification, that most or all of the thesis be written or defended in a foreign language. This section does not apply to stays, reports and experts coming from a Spanish-speaking country.
    3. At least two experts with accredited research experience belonging to a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute must have reported positively on the thesis prior to the reading of the thesis. These experts cannot be responsible for the stay mentioned in section a) above, nor can they form part of the team working on the research carried out during the stay. The director must provide a written justification of the suitability of the two international experts proposed.
    4. An expert belonging to a non-Spanish higher education institution or research centre with a stable relationship of 5 years or more, with the title of doctorate and accredited research experience, provided that they are not the person responsible for the stay mentioned in section a) above, has been a member of the thesis examining board.
  2. The defence of the thesis must take place at the university to which the doctorate student is affiliated. Doctorate students who wish to apply for the award of the title of "international doctorate" must state this circumstance when requesting authorisation to deposit the doctoral thesis.
  3. Both in the case of theses under co-tutorship and those without co-tutorship, a three-month stay in a university/centre other than those of the affiliation of the directors will be necessary in order to obtain the international mention.
  4. Stays at the student's home university will not be considered valid for the international mention.
