Biography

Luis Almenar Fernández is a medievalist and an economic and social historian of the Iberian Peninsula. His research has focused on studying late medieval material culture in the territories of the Crown of Aragon, especially in the Kingdom of Valencia, with the aim of contributing to debates on the construction of “consumer societies” in preindustrial Europe. In this regard, he has taken an interest in topics such as the consumption of ceramics, glass, and textiles, as well as in the spatial distribution of medieval dwellings. He is also interested in the ability of medieval objects to express meanings (material agency) and in their social use as a means of expressing notions of identity, power, and gender. Related to these issues is his interest in developing industries within this historical context, particularly ceramics and glassmaking, and in how the artisanal sector might have responded to the growing demand for new consumer goods.

He has been a lecturer and researcher at the Universities of Zaragoza and Complutense of Madrid, and has undertaken international research stays at the Université de Perpignan-Via Domitia and, on several occasions, at the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Group for the History of Population and Social Structure).
