Conference-workshop.

The activity is free and open to all students of the Universitat de València as well as any person older than 55. The activity has an cross-generational character in which people from different ages can share their vision and own experience about the proposed subject.

The conference-workshop will be given by Raquel Zapater, who holds a licenciatura (former Spanish degree) in Audiovisual Communication and a Diploma on Library Science and Documentation. Since 2000 she works as a documentalist in the Valencian Film Library and since 2016 she is a programmer of the didactics area of the Sub-directorate of Audio visual and Cinematography of the Valencian Institute of Culture. She is specialised in the field of Audio visual Literacy.

The melodrama genre will be defined during the activity as well as the characteristics of their characters with the aim to get to know which movies refer to. The model of the Hollywood institutional production will be also explained, as well as classic cinema and their cinematographic genres. There will be a reflection on how the cinema transmits in a very attractive way a message or ideology in which both speakers and receivers take part on. From the representation of female characters, the narrative and audio visual speech, there will be an analysis on how controlling social values reflect through the cinema (which will be the same as the patriarchal ones).

The conference will be focused on the representation of women in melodrama through the watch of movie pieces and on the analysis of the moralizing characteristic of this genre and how it does relay on social constructs, build by and for the society, reflecting a critic over women. This moralizing tendency of melodrama reaffirms controlling social values and exposes a critical view on women.
