Francisco Tomás Vert is emeritus full university professor of Physical Chemistry of the University of Valencia. He has authored more than 140 publications in scientific journals, books and chapters. He was also Principal of the Universitat de València.

His conference is called “Nanoscience”. Francisco Tomás has talked a bit about his conference: “Nanosciences world is located in the study of systems which size is in the interval between 1 and 100 nanometres, approximately. A nanometre is 0.000000001metros.

On these dimensions, physical and chemical phenomenons happen, and those don’t appear in the macroscopic world. Some consequences derivate from those processes, and those permit to design new applications in many areas, specially in medicine.

In this way, Nanoscience treats, on the one hand, the study of science in a size scale, with the analysis of new properties and its potential uses. And on the other hand, the design and “construction” of objects and structures in a nanomertical scale, with precise functionalities (nanoelectronics, nanomachines, theranostics, etc.).

This year, the Nobel Prize of Chemistry has been given to the professors Jean-Pierre Sauvage, J. Fraser Stoddart y Bernard L. Feringa, for its works in the synthesis of molecular nanomachines, which will be referred in this conference.

However, Nanoscience plays the most important role in therapeutics. In therapeutics, nanoscience is transformed into nanomedicine, through the design and the use of a great number of theranostics nanoparticles for the development of selective therapies and addressed to many pathologies, specially tumorals.”
