The Degree in archaeology aims to provide a deep understanding of past cultures and societies through the analysis of their material remnants. Students will acquire skills in dig methods, conservation techniques and analysis of archaeologic and paleobiologic items as well as the interpretation of historical and patrimony contexts and management of cultural patrimony. The programme also encourages thorough research and critical thinking.

These studies prepare archaeologists with solid knowledge of history and the domain of techniques and abilities for the interpretation the history, from the Prehistory to the Contemporary Era.

Graduates will be able to work in management, research and preservation archaeology projects for public and private services. Job opportunities are diverse: preventive and commercial archaeology, patrimony consultant, public administration, academic research, museum, interpretation centres, tourism, education and dissemination. They will also be counted on for evaluations of archaological impact and previous digs in urban development and territory transformation projects.

The demand for professionals is remarkable, promoted by the legal regulations on patrimony protection and the necessity of qualified professionals in thousands of archaeological intervention occurring yearly in the country.

The Degree in Archaeology is offered for the first time in Universitat de València and the Valencian territory in response to social and professional demand. Archaeological patrimony plays an essential role in the building of our society and the education of specialists is essential to guarantee its valuation, dissemination and conservation.

Worth Noting:
  • Archaeological practice is specifically regulated by the law to guarantee patrimony protection.
  • Archaeology graduates can take their careers in five big sectors:
    • Universities: education and research.
    • Museums: preservation and dissemination of patrimony.
    • Public administration: management and supervision of archaeological actions.
    • Specialised companies and freelance professionals of archaeological management.
    • Research institutes: scientific and interdisciplinary projects.
  • Universitat de València has over one hundred years of experience in archaeological research with the Milago Gil-Mascarell Boscà Archaeology Laboratory, equipped with spaces for material treatment, optical and paleobiological reference collections.
