El pròxim 11 de setembre a les 10:30 tindrà lloc la conferència “Digital tools for digital (and traditional) literacy, language, and learning”, impartida de manera virtual pel Dr. John Sabatini, de la Universitat de Memphis, EEUU.

Resum: In the 21st century, reading literacy, language, and learning are both paper-based and digital. There is considerable overlap in the literacy skills required to be fluent in comprehension, composition, and learning in either environment.  But there are also unique affordances and cognitive skills required to navigate each. Some might argue that digital environments, especially the current internet/WWW, are so different and complex as to constitute their own literacy domain. The internet is surely more multimodal (images, audio, videos, animation) with many more interactive, productive, and adaptive features than traditional reading and writing genres and artifacts. At the same time, digital capabilities and learning tools, enhanced by AI, are rapidly being developed to support diverse learners.  These tools can support traditional and digital learning. With the advent of AI, especially large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, many of these tools and capabilities can now be commanded using plain language on any digital device.  A brave new world is emerging with both utopian opportunities and dystopian risks.  In this talk, we traverse this terrain reviewing some practical tools for supporting diverse learners that are emerging from our labs and others research, as well as discussing ethical and practical challenges facing learners, teachers, and educational institutions.

Bio: Dr. Sabatini is a Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Psychology and the Institute for Intelligent Systems at the University of Memphis. He was previously a Senior Research Scientist at the Global Research Center, Research and Development Division at Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey.
