The Drinking Water Library project ends with the creation of the drinking water bacteria database for MALDI-TOF MS

The Drinking Water Library project, framed in the public financing program "Challenges-Collaboration 2015" (RTC-2015-4496-2), ended on December 31st after three years of intense work. The project consortium consisted of three partners: Aigües de Barcelona, Fundació Bosch i Gimpera, through the MARS research group (Water Microbiology related to Health) of the University of Barcelona, and the University of Valencia through the Spanish Type Culture Collection (CECT). As a result of the project, we have obtained the Drinking Water Library (DWL) database, a library of MALDI-TOF MS profiles for the identification of bacteria present in drinking water, generated using the Microflex (Bruker) equipment and compatible with the software Biotyper. The database includes the profiles of 320 strains, all of them accessible in the CECT: 199 of the collection itself (whose origin is mainly water for human consumption) and 121 from process waters, distribution networks, bottled waters and springs, which represent a total of 3,809 isolates analyzed during the project. In addition, the project has facilitated the training of the Microbiology Laboratory of Aigües de Barcelona for the identification of water bacteria for human consumption using the MALDI-TOF MS technology. The laboratory has the equipment, as well as the experience in its use and in the generation of the DWL database, which broadens the available database of Bruker, improving the probability of identification of bacteria from waters for human consumption.
