Charles Darwin hall in the Burjassot Campus’ inter-faculty classroom hosted last Saturday 6th October the opening of the sixth edition of ESTALMAT 2012-2013. This is a project which stimulates Maths skills in children who are talented in this science. The public universities in the Valencian Community, along with the teachers organization SEMCV Al-Khwarizmi collaborate in the programme.

This programme is funded by the Higher Council for Scientific Research, Fundación Vodafone España, and the Real Academi de Ciencias. Throughout two years, it develops extra-curricular activities on Saturdays. The Vice-Principal for International Relations Olga Gil, the Dean of the Facultat de Ciències Matemàtiques and coordinator of ESTALMAT in the Valencian Community Rafael Crespo, the institutional coordiantor of CSIC in the Valencian Community José Pío Beltrán, and the Vodafone representative in Spain Raúl Ramón attended the presentation of this year’s edition.

The Vice-Principal Olga Gil stressed ‘the importance of a project like this, which allows us to detect early talent.’ The ESTALMAT coordinator Rafael Crespo stated that it is very important to support children’s talent because our main responsibility is ‘transfering knowledge so that we can make a better world.’

The children and their families attended the event, as well as teachers. The programme started with a camping activity in Requena. 25 children, born between 1999 and 2000, take part in this year’s edition. It is also scheduled to continue with a biennial programme for students who have already finished school.

Children were encouraged to take advantage of this activity, which is present in ten places over Spain. The representative of Vodafone España Raúl Ramón stressed the relevance of the project ‘since both the public sector and private one collaborate.’

The researcher from CSIC José Pío Beltrán, who works in the Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular de Plantas, gave a lecture titled ‘Los cultivos biotecnológicos, la salud y las matemáticas’.
