The University of Valencia, through the Office of the Vice-Principal for Territorial Projection and Participation, maintains the strategy of being present in the Valencian territory through the organisation of activities in towns and regions, and the collaboration of university specialists. It is the case of this exhibtion, centred on Ribera del Xúquer an emblematic region in Valencia’s coast where a big Valencian river gives it its name and explains its existence. The exhibition “The Universitat de València and its regional environment: La Ribera del Xúquer” has counted with around 50 professors from different knowledge areas of the Universitat; several research groups, technicians from public administrations and local specialists. The Ribera del Xúquer is nowadays a Valencian scenario where the main intensive agriculture is displayed, where there are rice fields, citrus fruits, fruit trees and vegetable gardens which have been irrigated thanks to a complex hydraulic system of canals and dykes for centuries. Likewise, it is a specially rich space, heterogeneous in the socioeconomic field (car industry, tourism, cooperative movement, etc.); it is very valuable for its cultural legacy (architectonic and artistic heritage, celebrations and traditions, distinguished people); with a great scenic and environmental view (Albufera or the inland mountains) where there is an important flower and species diversity (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians). Definitely, an exhibition which aims at discovering how the region’s current reality was shaped and whose objective is to preserve its historical heritage and its identity traits in the current globalised world.
