Presentation
In the study of the effort for bulding and giving cities infrastructures for public use and decoration, the effort of its artifices, the conjuction of a whole tradition of technical knowledge, as well as aesthetic and symbolic values related to this work. All this transforms public work in the result of the conjuction between art and technique, as well as the reflection of the several periods in which they were promoted and when the historical and political relevance grew. The study of public work haspeaked the interest of historians, archeologists, architects, engineers, etc. When a way of dialogue between the different disciplines and the researchers of the different periods was needed, the Demetrio Ribes Chair decided to organise the Interdisciplinary Studies Workshop on the History of Public Works, which in this second edition has been titled 'Ingeniería y ciudad' (Engineering and city). These scientific reunions gather national and international experts who, in a diachronic and diatopic sens, adress aspects related to the foundation and construction of cities, civil engineering and supply for the villages, fortified spaces, the connexion between a city and its transportation and comunication infrastructure, as well as transformations and new connexions, resulting of a new industrial order.
