One of the Demetrio Ribes Chair's most firm commitments is to appreciate the most representative infrastructures of the Valencian territory and to make them known to the general public. What better way than to do it in the same place we want to defend? On this occasion, we invite you to walk along the Ruta del Agua (Water Route) of La Vall de Segó.
A walk through fieds and villages to thiscover the traditional irrigation system of La Vall de Segó, that uses the water of the Font de Quart. All explained by experts and conaisseurs of the history of this system in a dynamic and entertaining way.
Presentation
In the center of La Vall de Segó is the Font de Quart, a natural spring whose irrigation and distribution system has its origin in the Moorish period. Today, this is a recreative area. Its volume of water reaches a total of 10,000 fanegadas (850 ha) of the fields of 5 villages which form the Vall (Faura, Benifairó de les Valls, Quartell, Quart de les Valls and Benavites) and of Almenara.
The distribution of the water from this system is divided from the beginning of the canal in proportional parts through the two first sistars. This distribution comes from a sentence from the 15th century which stablishes the traditional repartition, reflected in the succesive ordinances of 1854 and 1883. As per today, the irrigation system of the Font de Quart maintains the same historical distribution.

This is a circular route of 5.5 km in length, completely flat and accessible. The path runs parallel to the Font de Quart irrigation canal, where a rich landscape and cultural heritage is preserved.
Along the route, we will see and enjoy the Font de Quart, several sistars or water dividers, hydraulic mills or llavaners. We will also visit the New Quartell Mill, now converted into the Water Museum, a space that takes us back in time. Its interior houses the original machinery of the old water mill, as well as several rooms dedicated to traditional rural life.
Exhibition: 'Weirs, Tradition, Ingenuity and Patrimony'
Coinciding with the walk, the Water Museum will be hosting our exhibition ‘Assuts: tradició, ingeni i patrimoni’ ('Weirs, Tradition, Ingenuity and Patrimony'), dedicated to these essential elements in Valencian historical irrigation. The exhibition will be guided by the curator of the exhibition and will complement the day's visit.
