Valencian Aerodromes of the Civil War. Scenes, Elements and Memory of a Territory Defense Network

Dring the Spanish Civil War, aircraft was one of the most important factor balancing the scales. Due to the scarcity of infrastructure, several aerodromes were built throughout the Spanish geography. The Valencian territory wasn¡t an exception and many air fields were installed to provide frontline and defense against enemies.

This publication is included in the 26 number of te Valencia Community Transportation Museum Booklet Collection and showcases these infrastructure and their elements in their context. First, the historical moment is introduced along with the republican aerial territory organisation and several aircraft scenes, including production, main crafts and war carthography.

The second part focuses on Valencian aerodromes, their organisation and classification regarding the aircraft fields i their territory. Secondly, a closer look on the field composition and the element typologies: refurbished farms for commanding and guarding points, refuge, powder storage, trench and machine-gun location. The last part looks for detail in preserved elements by exhaustive field work and revaluation projects.

This publication brings together a whole process that links the diffuse commemoration of the second millennium of the Via Augusta with the centenary of Ignacio Villalonga's claim for a railway axis that would run along the Mediterranean peninsular coast and communicate with trans-Pyrenean Europe. Since ancient times, the Mediterranean axis has been of great importance for the communication of people and ideas and the distribution of goods. In medieval and modern times it gave way to a fragmented road network, and from the second half of the 18th century to a radial peninsular layout. These characteristics were transferred in the following century to the railway network, which, due to the diversity of companies, became extremely fragmented. In the Valencian sphere, in the first decades of the 20th century, there was a constant request for improvements in infrastructures and communications with a view to the development of the economy. Between the Regional Exhibition of Valencia in 1909 and the First World War, there were requests for improvements to the port, a direct train linking it with Madrid via Utiel and a Mediterranean rail corridor. In the latter case, the proposal made by Ignacio Villalonga in 1918 stands out. Social, economic and political realities prevented or delayed most of the proposals. The incorporation of Spain into the European Union in 1986 allowed this circumstance to be reconsidered. The Mediterranean Corridor, in a new supranational articulation, can be seen in the network of multimodal corridors of the European Union.

Founded in 1776, the society intervened in agriculture, commerce, industry and sociocultural progress, as well as territory research and urban planification as public administration advisors ands promoting projects like one of the most important map of the Valencian carthographic legacy- These and the associate documents served as source for the author to introduce us to the contribution of this society for the Valencian urban structure.

This new number is included in the Valencian Community Transportation Museum Booklet Collection and represents the first Valencian dock stranders' monographic study.

It's the 5th number dedicated to the Valencia dock. It focuses on the historical study of the Public Strander, the Junta d'Obres Strander and the Floating Dam from the early 20th century. Only the Public Strander has survived until today, yet all of them are representatives of an era of out history.

The seaside Valencian districts are the main focus of the book. To know is to preserve, that is true for all heritage. The pages ring value to these districts, their monuments and architecture, their urban track, their testimonies, their culture and their tradition. These districts are tightly related to sea activities which define their Mediterranean identity.

The book goes through the history of Poblats Marítims of Valencia with twenty one contribution from experts divided in six theme blocks for: the formation of seaside urban nuclei from the 13^th century to the 20^th century; the communication and irrigation networks; the changes of the late 19^th century on their urban physiognomy and lifestyle; social scenery; art forms that highlighted the Mediterranean essence; and sailing traditions.

The author closes the epilogue with a reflection on que everyday aspects of the station and a photgraphy look on it.
