The author addresses this analysis from different fields: urban planning, architecture, construction, transport and communications. The expansion planning of the cities is the theoretical base to define the conceptual changes which, during a century and a half, make the structure and organisation of the urban shape, keeping in mind the interactions caused by the incorporation of new transport systems such as the railway. The study of the architectonic and structural characteristics of Russafa is unique since the 19th century until today, where vestiges and witnesses of its past constitute a rich patrimonial legacy. For its future, the author presents a methodology to analyse the refurbishment, augmenting the environmental, residential and patrimonial quality and the sustainability.
