Juan Ramón Martí Chulià

When he was 6 he had his first contact with music theory and bandurria, which is an instrument of double plucked strings, with José Peropadre i Forniés. As a result, he was involved in traditional music since he was young in his family and his group of friends.

He has been a member of the Escola de Danses de Xàtiva since 1978. He was first a musician of the rondalla who played the bandurria, and then became the conductor of the rondalla. He recorded a disc of folk music called Cants i balls de la Costera in 2000, which was sponsored by the Obra Social de Caixa Ontinyent.

He started playing dolçaina in 1980 with Francesc Belda, who was a primary school teacher and an enthusiast of dolçaina. “La Colla La Canya” was born as a result of this experience.

He started to learn music at the Societat Primitiva Setabense in 1980. He studied medium studies of trombone. He is a musician of the Societat Primitiva Setabense, la Vella of Xàtiva since 1982.

Since 1997, he has been a teacher of dolçaina at the School of the Grup de Danses Portitxol of Xàbia and the director of its rondalla. He has been the director of the Colla Portitxol dolçaines i percussió of Xàbia.

He has been a teacher of the Local School of Dolçaina of Gavarda and director of the Colla la Burra Parda since 2005.

He has been a professor of dolçaina in the School of the Colla la Socarrà of Xàtiva since 1996. Additionally, he was one of the founders of this Colla and its director until 2006.

He has been professor of dolçaina of the Music School of the Primitiva Setabense of Xàtiva.

He was professor of dolçaina in the Local School of Poble Nou de Benitatxell from 2002 to 2009.

He studied the professional degree of dolçaina in the Conservatori Professional de Música José Iturbi of Valencia and his teacher was Xavier Richart Peris. He obtained the official degree of dolçaina in 2008 at the Conservatori d’Albaida with the teacher Joan Antoni Martínez.

He collaborates with the Grup de Danses Font Santa of Teulada since 1994 performing the dances that the group requires.

He conducted the Grup de Danses Pedreguer and the Orchestra Pols i Pua of Xàtiva from 1994 to 2006. He has performed folk music solo and in group all around the Valencian Community, Spain and Europe.

At the end of 2014, he became a member of the rondalla of the Valencian singer Pep Gimeno “Botifarra”, although he had already collaborated with him for 30 years in many performances playing the bandurria and the dolçaina.
