The Favara irrigation canal is one of the most important in the Vega of València, and the one that receives the greatest amount of water, in that case it has fourteen rows while the minor rows have ten as established in the 17th century. The séquia mare (the main irrigation canal) is the longest one due to the fact that its course, starting with the diversion weir, ends in the Catarroja-Albal tongues of land. Furthermore, it is the irrigation canal that irrigates most municipalities: València and the southern districts, Sedaví, Alfafar, Benetússer, Loc Nou de la Corona, Massanassa, Catarroja and Albal.

The first information we have is from an Andalusian chronicle, which indicates that in 1094 it was already irrigating the surrounding lands.
