The Language Centre launches a multilingual reading point: BookCrossing Space

  • March 11st, 2024

At the Language Centre of the University of Valencia, more than language teaching and the administration of official exams, we strive to cultivate a community that feels part of something bigger; our commitment goes beyond the classroom, which is why we seek to provide our students with a comprehensive experience that includes a significant cultural component. Proposals like this are born from this leitmotiv, since this promotes the values that we carry as a flag and, in addition, materializing in activities that not only contribute to language learning, but also enrich the personal and academic life of our members.

One of the competencies that we consider fundamental in this process is reading comprehension. We understand that not only does this skill allow you to acquire vocabulary effectively, but it also opens doors to new linguistic and cultural horizons, regardless of the language in which it is practiced. It is in this context that we have decided to strengthen our cultural offer with the installation of a space dedicated to BookCrossing.

In our BookCrossing Space, we have gathered a wide bibliographic variety that covers more than 10 different languages, from Valencian and Spanish to English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese, among others. This collection ranges from literary classics to contemporary works, ensuring an enriching and diverse reading experience for all our students and members of the university community.

In addition, we have created a cozy and peaceful atmosphere within our reading nook. Here you will find two comfortable well-lit armchairs that invite you to immerse yourself in reading in a comfortable and relaxed way. We strongly believe that the environment in which you read can significantly influence the reading experience, so we have made sure to provide a space that encourages concentration and enjoyment of reading.

But how exactly does BookCrossing work? It's a simple but wonderfully effective process: participants can select a book from our shelf and take it with them. Once they have enjoyed their reading, they have the option to return the book to the same place for someone else to enjoy, or even leave it in any other public place for their journey to continue. This practice is based on the concept of sharing the joy of reading and allowing books to circulate freely among different readers, thus contributing to the dissemination of knowledge.

The inspiration behind this initiative dates back to 2001, when the American Ron Hornbaker founded the BookCrossing movement. Since then, this idea of turning the world into a large, ever-moving library has gained a worldwide following. At the Language Centre of the University of Valencia, we are honoured to join this global community of avid readers and look forward to contributing to their growth and evolution in the years to come.

We invite you to join us on this book exchange adventure and discover the pleasure of reading in multiple languages at the Language Centre at the University of Valencia. Together, we can explore new worlds through the pages of a book and enjoy the richness of literature. We hope to see you soon in our BookCrossing Space!
