The Universitat de València introduces the initiative of the Generalitat to promote a more seamless and sustainable mobility. The new app will help to reduce traffic jams and emissions, facilitating then more efficient journeys to the campus.
The Universitat de València goes one step further in its commitment to sustainable mobility thanks to the incorporation of València Comparteix Cotxe (Valencia Shares Car), the platform promoted by the Generalitat Valenciana that facilitates sharing vehicles with people who make similar journeys. Burjassot Campus, one of the main poles of academic and scientific activity of the metropolitan area, has been chosen as one of the areas where the app is fully operative.
The origin of this tool is within a context of a metropolitan area in Valencia that bears 6.1 millions of daily journeys, many of them in vehicles with a single occupant. This dynamic causes that a driver stays even 95 hours stuck in traffic yearly, a time that affects not only to personal wellness, but also to academic and job efficiency.
An app made for the university community
València comparteix cotxe is not only a technological tool, but also a way to connect those who go to the same place at the same time. The app allows verifying the identity of the users, matching drivers and passengers who have similar routes, as well as calculating the positive environmental impact of every shared journey. Moreover, it also includes an economic incentive thanks to the state system of Energy Savings Certificate, which allows drivers to receive 0.04 euros per kilometer and passenger, which is actually 100/200 euros per month on average.
For students and staff of the UV, this is a real alternative to reduce expenses, avoid traffic pressure during peak hours, and turn daily journeys into a more social and efficient experience.
Six strategic areas connected
The Burjassot Campus is part of the first deployment of the initiative, along with five big mobility focus of the metropolitan area:
-
Hospital La Fe
-
Ciutat Administrativa 9 d’Octubre
-
Polígon industrial de Riba-roja
-
Polígon industrial Jaume I d’Almussafes
-
Centre Comercial Bonaire
These areas have been chosen because of their high journey concentration and because of the significant potential to reduce congestions if the average vehicles occupancy increases.
One step forward to a more sustainable campus
For the Universitat de València, the appearance of València Comparteix Cotxe strengthens a mobility strategy that already supports public transportation, cycling, and other sustainable alternatives. The new tool does not replace these options. Instead, it supplements them, especially for those who live in municipalities with limited connections or long-distance transport journeys.
With this initiative, UV moves forward to a more accessible campus model, which makes it less congested and more aligned with the current environmental challenges, contributing to the improvement of life quality of the whole university community.
