Plant conservation biology - BCPUV

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2013-096

Description of research activity:

Plant conservation biology deals with the study of the causes of such biodiversity loss and how to minimise it through conversation techniques, both in situ and ex situ. It is also concerned with boosting sustainable development through the rational use of plant and landscape resources. It focuses its research on various aspects related to the preservation and rational use of natural resources.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Desarrollo de estrategias de conservacion vegetal in-situ y ex-situ
  • Analisis y Control de calidad de vegetales medicinales

Research lines:
  • Medicinal plants.Study of medicinal plants, the structure of plant organs and the substances that provide medicinal, toxic or bromatological proprieties. This study is oriented towards the rational use of resources and its results can be directly applied to health, industry and agriculture.
  • Floristics.Floristics is the part of phytogeography dedicated to making inventory of systematic entities or taxa of a territory, i.e. the flora of that territory, as well as its area of distribution, which is fundamental for the development of plant conservation strategies.
  • Ex-situ conservation.Application of conservation techniques for endangered species, viability studies, germination physiology and seed and spore ageing.
  • Anatomy.Recognition of plant organs and tissues that help to understand adaptation mechanisms, physiological processes, structural alterations, ontogenetic processes as well as to establish relationships between species, gender and families.
  • Vegetation and in-situ conservation.Study of plant communities and their relationship with environmental factors. In situ conservation.
