The unit's researchers are dedicated to the study of the pathogenic mechanisms and the cellular and molecular bases of diseases of the visual system, including the following lines of research: diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, development and congenital malformations of the visual system, prevention of glaucomatous blindness, and nutrition and eye health. • Retinopatia diabetica e hipertensiva: estudio de factores de riesgo asociados a las retinopatias, desde un punto de vista genetico, molecular y celular, para prevenir la ceguera causada por estas patologias.
• Investigacion en desarrollo y malformaciones congenitas del sistema visual: profundizar en el conocimiento de los mecanismos etiopatogenicos que llevan a la aparicion y desarrollo de malformaciones congenitas del sistema visual para poder prevenir las complicaciones y perdidas de vision asociadas.
• Prevencion de la ceguera glaucomatosa: conocer las bases moleculares, celulares y geneticas de la neuropatia optica glaucomatosa que nos ayuden en la identificacion de biomarcadores especificos de esta enfermedad y prevenir la ceguera.
• Nutricion y salud ocular: estudio de la nutricion y otros habitos de estilo de vida en relacion a la salud ocular.
• Enfermedades de la macula: profundizar en el conocimiento de las bases moleculares y geneticas de las enfermedades de la macula con el fin de encontrar biomarcadores que nos ayuden a desarrollar nuevas estrategias diagnosticas y terapeuticas para estas enfermedades.

• Diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy research.Identification of genes and molecules involved in the ocular complications of diabetes mellitus. Oxidative stress. Cellular bases of retinopathies.
• Research on development and congenital malformations of the visual system.Identification of genes and molecules involved in the development of the eyeball and optic nerve. Effect of pre- and postnatal exposure to alcohol and drugs on the development of the visual system.
• Nutrition and eye health.Study of nutrition and eating disorders on the visual system. Nutrition, vitamins, antioxidants, eye diseases and eating disorders (obesity and anorexia nervosa).
• Macular deseases.Study of macular pathology and its impact on visual acuity and quality of life.
