Biotechnological Pest Control - CPB

Reference of the Group:

GIUV2013-153

Description of research activity:

The research of the Biotechnological Pest Control group of the Universitat of València aims to optimise Integrated Management strategies designed for the control of pests of agronomic interest. The group's funding is supported by research projects and contracts financed by public and private entities. We are working specifically on three research lines, the objectives of which are summarised below: Study of the genetic and biochemical bases of pesticide resistance in order to delay pest emergence and avoid the phenomenon of cross-resistance. Development of new bioinsecticides: Extending the known spectrum of action of B. thuringiensis and the search for new entomopathogenic viruses. Insect-pathogen interaction: Identifying the mechanisms involved in the response to pathogens.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Optimizacion y diseño de nuevas estrategias para el control de plagas de interes agronomico mediante el desarrollo de nuevos plaguicidas y el manejo de la resistencia.

Research lines:
  • Resistance to synthetic pesticides.Study of the mechanisms of resistance to synthetic pesticides and promotion of their selectivity.
  • Resistance to bioinsecticides.Study of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis toxins in both biopesticide formulations and transgenic plants. Study of the mechanisms of resistance to synthetic pesticides and promotion of their selectivity.
  • Development of new bioinsecticides.Isolation and characterisation of novel B. thuringiensis genes encoding proteins with high insecticidal action. Use of natural or genetically modified isolates with high effectiveness and/or broader spectrum of action.
  • Insect-pathogen interaction. To delve into the molecular mechanisms that control the interaction of insects with their viral and bacterial pathogens. To develop strategies that enhance the use of bioinsecticides by modifying the immune response to pathogen attack.
