Description of research activity:
Starting from the conception that the Landscape is any part of the territory, as perceived by the populations, whose character results from the action of natural and human factors and their interrelationships; and from the premise that the landscape is important for the general interest, since it constitutes an environmental and cultural good that generates well-being, collective identity and economic dynamism, the GeoPaisaje_UV Research Group is constituted as a work team that aims to guide its research activity to the study of the different dimensions of the landscape from a territorial perspective. In this sense, the group will develop research projects that contribute to generating useful knowledge for the processes of territorial organization and urban planning, as well as safeguarding and enhancing environmental, heritage and collective identities. Therefore, the Research Group focuses on the ¿landscape¿ object in all its dimensions: ecological, cultural-heritage, historical, perceptual, visual, iconographic, pedagogical and economic. Therefore, the Research Group focuses on the ¿landscape¿ object in all its dimensions: ecological, cultural-heritage, historical, perceptual, visual, iconographic, pedagogical and economic. The investigations are essentially addressed through approaches implemented through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), quantitative and qualitative methods, at various spatio-temporal scales: from local to regional; from the past, to the present and to the future; the everyday to the meaningful. Geographic analyzes of the landscape combine other disciplines in addition to Geography such as Ecology, Architecture, Engineering, Archaeology, Economics and even Didactics. This is why the search for interdisciplinarity in research is intended, as well as the transfer of knowledge to citizens by collaborating on projects with organizations and groups of civil society.

Scientific-technical goals:
  • Estudio de estructuras, procesos y significados del paisaje para su ordenacion, gestion y valorizacion.

Research lines:
  • Analysis of landscape preferences and social meanings of the landscape.Landscape preferences are addressed in various thematic contexts, with a significant focus on the study of lived landscapes and their meanings. The aim is to identify the characteristics of landscapes that generate well-being for the population and analyse why.
  • Design of GIS models for the characterization and ecological evaluation of the landscape. The aim is to design cartographic models using geographic information systems (GIS) to represent and diagnose ecological networks (connectivity-fragmentation) that assist in the decision-making process in land-use planning or environmental impact assessment work.
  • Structure, landscape dynamics and ecosystem services. This line of research focuses on the study of landscape patterns, the processes that generate these structures and their evolution over time, with the aim of contributing to the planning and management of current landscapes and the development of future scenarios.
  • Landstewardship and enhancement of landscape-heritage resources. The purpose of this line is to analyse the land stewardship tool as an opportunity to carry out projects for environmental and heritage protection, as well as socio-economic, educational and cultural development.
