Description of research activity:

The Laboratory of Molecular Ageing in Chronic Diseases is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that play a key role in the relationship between ageing and chronic diseases. To this end, we concentrate on studying the role of cellular heterogeneity in organ and tissue function, predicting accelerated ageing in chronic conditions, and developing in vitro models to mimic ageing in a Petri dish. Advances in genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic technologies are ushering in a new era for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying organismal ageing. Through this approach, we aim to accelerate the development of anti-ageing interventions to prevent or reduce the incidence of age-related diseases. We develop novel omics and single-cell methodologies, with a focus on metabolic diseases, by analysing both liquid and solid samples from various species. We are particularly interested in the translational applications of our methodologies, with special emphasis on longitudinal cohorts, including paediatric and elderly donors.

Research lines:
  • Cellular heterogeneity and susceptibility to chronic diseases.We investigate how cellular heterogeneity affects tissue function and whether variability between cells increases susceptibility to disease.
  • Accelerated ageing in young individuals.Lifestyle, dietary interventions and chronic diseases have been shown to accelerate the ageing phenotype. Our goal is to dissect the genetic and epigenetic molecular signatures associated with accelerated ageing under different conditions.
  • Crosstalk between ageing and epigenetics in chronic diseases.To better understand the precise molecular mechanisms that lead to cellular heterogeneity, we investigate the epigenetic profile and histone and DNA modifications in individual cells using single-cell multi-omic approaches.
  • Modelled ageing in organoids.Our goal is to develop three-dimensional organoids that recapitulate the molecular characteristics of ageing in order to establish functional assays and evaluate therapeutic interventions against ageing.
