Tomorrow Thursday, 14 November, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Valencia held an open debate in order to analyse the consequences of the closure of Canal NOU in Valencian society. The debate will take place at Sánchez Ayuso room on the first floor of the Faculty of Economics at 12:00.
The event will be presented by the dean of the faculty, Vicent Soler, it will be moderated by tenured university Professor Pau Rausell, researcher responsible for Econcult (Economics of culture), and it will feature Ramón Zallo, Full-University Professor of Audiovisual Communication at the University of Basque Country and president of the Latin Union of Political Economy of Information, Communication and Culture (ULEPICC); Rafael Castelló, economist, member of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and director of the Language Policy Service of the University of Valencia; Miquel Francés, tenured university Professor of Audiovisual Communication at the University of Valencia, director of the Master’s degree in Audiovisual Contents and Formats, and responsible for the Audiovisual Workshop of UVEG; and Ximo Pérez, producer of L' Alqueria Blanca (film and television producer).
The closure of RRVV implies the end of the provision of a public good of complex composition. A public television on the one hand involves the provision of information about the reality that surrounds us and that allows citizens to position and decide on various topics in greater technical capacity and higher quality of democracy. At the same time a public media permits the expression of diverse and plural voices outside their "market value" fulfilling the right to participate and freedom of expression of their citizenship. On the other hand a public media, if effective, structures and forms a framework of common values that can strengthen the social cohesiveness of a community, by increasing the sense of identity and belonging. And in the case of minority languages territories is clear that public media is a tool for widespread its use, normalize it and dignify it, so it becomes one of the most effective tools in the process of language standardization in multilingual territories. Finally, the public media have become also in tractor elements of the regional audiovisual sectors at a time in which all the cultural and creative sectors become strong candidates to star in the change in the production model and instrument of fight against the crisis.
Will RTVV keep providing effectively and efficiently the public goods previously reported? What do we lose the Valencian people, in terms of social utility with this closure? Can these public goods be provided with alternative strategies to the existence of a regional television?
