‘Pasajes’, the journal co-published by Universitat de València and Fundación Cañada Blanch, includes a report about Pío Baroja in its No. 37 (winter 2011-2012) from a contemporary point of view. Baroja was a creator of stories and a master of fiction, but he also was a pioneer in autofiction, that is, fictionalized autobiography.
Baroja is not only a classic in literature and a witness of a whole age but a referent in contemporary literature as well, an iconoclastic writer who goes beyond genres and who keeps everyone’s interest beyond ideological or temporal limitations.
The monograph has been coordinated by the Universitat de València’s lecturers Justo Serna and Francisco Fuster. It has had the collaboration of outstanding experts in the work of the Basque writer like Luis Mateo Díaz (‘Baroja entre los maestros’), Manuel Alberca (‘Murguía y Baroja’), Rafael Núñez Florencio (‘Naturaleza y ética en Baroja’), Jesús Marchamalo (‘Baroja y el abrigo’), and the coordinators themselves, Francisco Fuster (‘Baroja sobre Baroja’) and Justo Serna (‘El lector de novelas. La ficción de Andrés Hurtado’).
An interview to José-Carlos Mainer, one of the most important experts on Baroja’s work, is included in the journal. He speaks about Baroja’s work, cultural history or the university. He also points out some keys to read Baroja’s works.
This edition includes another interview, that of Hayden White, history theoretician and author. In the section called ‘temas’, articles by Javier de Lucas or by Teresa López Pardina can be also read.
The book reviews have also an important place in the journal. Carlos J. Moya devotes one to Francisco Rubia’s work on mora freedom and neuroscience (El fantasma de la libertad), Miriam Hoyo’s review is for Günter Anders’ work La obsolescencia del hombre; Guillermo Quintás reviews th book by Sylvain Gouguenheim Aristóteles y el Islam; Francisco Fuster reviews the reissue Julio Caro’s Los Baroja; and finally, Justo Serna reviews the tribute book to José-Carlos Mainer titled Para Mainer.
