The Instituto de Biomecánica of Valencia (IBV) awarded with the IX IBV Prize for Functional Valuation a clinical case presented by the professor of the Department of Physiotherapy of the Universitat de València María Luz Sánchez Sánchez. The awarded case is titled “Valuation of the effect of specific physiotherapist techniques of arch stimulation, dissociation and equilibrium in the recovering of the march after an ictus”.

The prize was awarded during the X Sessiond of Functional Valuation, that gathered 150 professionals of those specialities related with the study, prevention and treatment of the musculoskeletal system injuries. With this ward the IBV wants to stimulate and show the innovating and advanced scientific knowledge in the use of valuation functional biomechanical applications and techniques.

Objective of the awarded research

Recovering the march capacity is vital for patients with ictus effects and one of the main objectives in rehabilitation programmes. After an ictus there are several factors that affect the alteration of the march: muscle weakness and paralysis, the deficient motor control and dynamic equilibrium, the altered cardiorespiratory endurance and the soft tissues contraction.

“Physiotherapy composed by different approaches components has appeared to be more beneficial than any other treatment in people with ictus consequences. But, the future research needs to clarify which specific techniques are more appropriate for the recovery of the march after an ictus”, has explained María Luz Sánchez.

The objective of the study carried out by this Valencian professional was to know the effect of the physiotherapeutic treatment techniques composed by stimulation sensitive arch stimulation, training in movements dissociation and extra re-education techniques of the equilibrium applied depending on the patient functional level when recovering from the march in patients with hemiparesis after an ictus.

María Luz Sánchez achieved to demonstrate that techniques studied are effective when recovering from the march in patients with hemiparesis after an ictus. To do this, the application NedAMH/IBV for the analysis of the march has been used, because it allows to evaluate easily the effect of specific techniques usually used in the recovering from an ictus.

During the sessions, the last advances in the biomechanical valuation field, and in the exploration of challenges and possibilities of the biomechanics from the perspective of several users were made public.

The consolidation of these sessions at the national level has motivated the creation of the Comunidad de Valoración Biomecánica (www.valoracion.ibv.org).  This virtual meeting point brings more than 750 professionals together such as doctors -specialised in rehabilitation, otorhinolaryngology, evaluating medicine, sport and traumatology, mainly- and other professionals from hospitals, mutual insurance companies and occupational diseases, insurance companies, private clinics and different statements of the health administration from all around Spain.
