A course series analyzes the Basque language, its literature, cinema and music, at the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication

The Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication of the University of Valencia hosts from Tuesday the series 'Introduction to Basque culture', which will cover in various seminars, different areas of the Basque culture such as its language, literature, cinema and music.The event has been organized by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture, Equality and Communication and Office for Teaching Staff and Academic Planning of the Faculty, along with the Basque Institute Etxepare. Attendance and access is free (limited to capacity).

The events are divided into four sessions, until May, designed to explore the language and culture (12 February), literature (12 March), cinema (16 April) and music (14 May).

On Tuesday 12 February, from 18:00 to 20:00, at the "Saló de Graus" of the Faculty, Professor of the University of Valencia, Garikoitz Knör Santiago, will give a general introduction to the Basque culture that will cover areas such as geographic extension and the diversity of its people, as well as other issues related with the Basque language such as history, sociolinguistics and dialectology.

On March 12, at the "Sala de Juntes" of the Faculty, from 18:00 to 20:30, Jose Mari Olaziregi Alustiza, current director of Promotion and Dissemination of the Basque Language at the Basque Institute Etxepare, will give a presentation on the evolution of the Basque literature during the 19th and 20th centuries. He will be joined by writer and professor of Economic History at the University of the Basque Country, Iban Zaldua Gonzalez, who will present a view on the Basque literaty panorama.

The section covering Basque cinematography will take place at the "Saló de Graus" of the Faculty on 16 April, from 18:00 to 21:00.Current director of the Basque Film Archive and committee member of the San Sebastian Festival, Joxean Fernández, former professor at the University of Nantes and committee member of the Film Festival in that city, will give a presentation of recent history and current situation of the Basque cinema including the screening of several film clips of that filmography.

Multimedia concert

Lastly, on May 14, in the cycle Introducció a la cultura basca at the "Saló de Graus" (from 18:00 to 20:30), there will be a multimedia show created by musicians Mikel Markez and Eñaut Elorrieta.Titled after one of the most famous songs by Basque singer-songwriter Mikel Laboa Baga biga higa.The project, which aims to cultural transmission and promotion of the course and referents of Basque music, offers a journey through the history of music sung in Basque.
