A conference will reflect on Tuesday, 17 May at La Nau, on how fiction products have to be in local and regional televisions. The Aula Magna of the historic building of the Universitat de València will hold the act at 19 hours, which will also serve as a presentation of ‘El Enviado’, a project of a fiction series elaborated by former students of the Master’s Degree in Audiovisual Contents and Formats, and the new edition of the sessions TVMorfosis/CONTD - Digital Television Content.
In a moment when the Valencian political parties, the audio-visual sector and part of the civil society have started a process to define how the model of autonomic public media of the future has to be, it is convenient to think about the role that television fiction would have to play in this new period that has barely begun.
Firstly, ‘we will have to wonder if, in an economically difficult scenario as the current one, it is necessary or convenient for the Valencian public television that is designed to include fiction content in its programming. In case we get an affirmative answer, the second step would have to be to think about what type of fiction would be the most suitable taking into account the current scenario, both in genre and the topics to approach’, points out Àlvar Peris, professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Universitat de València, who will present and moderate the debate.
For instance, the new television would have to make historic fiction? If so, how and what way? How does past or collective memory have to be represented? Is it interesting to add in its programming a daily series that builds loyalty with the audience and invigorates the audio-visual sector? And what about prime time series? Do they have to be suitable for all audiences, along with the general character of the channel, or can they address areas that interest just the adult public? And comedy, how does it have to be made? Is it possible to make humour about any topic or to always be politically correct to not to offend the spectators? How can transmedia narrative be integrated in this scenario? Is it possible to make fictions with tightest budgets that are only diffused online?
These will be some of the questions that will be tried to resolve from the interventions and comments of Pau Martínez, president of EDAV (Audiovisual Writers of Valencia); Rodolf Sirera, playwright and screenwriter with a long trajectory in the sector, winner of several prizes and awards; and Ernest J. Sorrentino, screenwriter with a significant experience in the comedy genre.
‘El Enviado’: fiction, entrepreneurship and micropatronage
Álex Garzó and Raúl Molina will also be participating, presenting the short film ‘El Enviado’, a project of fiction series developed in the Master’s degree in Audiovisual Contents and Formats of the Universitat de València thanks to the contribution of 19 patrons that have donated for the work through Uniempren the first university crowdfunding platform in Spain, managed by the General Foundation of the academic institution.
The idea of ‘El Enviado’ was born in 2013 from the master’s degree final project of Álex Garzó and Raúl Molina. Their project has had, furthermore, the support of the Audiovisual Workshop of the Universitat and of the producer Tomás & Co.
The project of these young entrepreneurs is stared in by Valencian actors who join years of drama experience and hope and strength of new blood. So, ‘El Enviado’ has the participation of Rafa Alarcón, actor in national series and well-known in Valencia for his work in the Circuit Café-Teatre; Paula García Sabio actor in national series and films; Paco Sanchis (Canal 9); Enric Juezas, theatre and film actor; and young actors, like Víctor Fajardo.
‘The format of ‘El Enviado’ is a fiction series with 8 episodes, for a generalist channel and to be broadcasted in prime time. It tells the story of a person who works to the lobbies and shows the background of this phenomenon, illegal in Spain, as well as the media and political class manipulation. The first session is about the privatisation of the health, but that we are presenting now is a small episode, conclusive, which pretends to show the audience how the series will be’, explains Raúl Molina.
The act, which will take place at the Aula Magna of building La Nau (Universidad Street 2, Valencia) at 19:00,will also serve as a presentation of and the new edition of jornadas TVMorfosis/CONTD – Contenidos para la Televisión Digital, which will be held on 25 and May in the Audiovisual Workshop (TAU) of the Universitat de València.
