Adela Cortina, awarded with the Know Square Prize to the Exemplary Academic Career 2016

Adela Cortina, full university professor of Ethics and Political Philosophy of the Universitat de València, will receive on 31 January the Know Square Prize 2016 to the Exemplary Academic Career. The jury of the sixth edition of this prizes has voted unanimously the professor of the Universitat de València. The award ceremony takes place at 19:00h at the Auditorium Museo Lázaro Galdiano, in Madrid.

The jury, composed by 25 professionals, journalists, entrepreneurs and managers, has taken into account the biography and experience of the winner, as well as, her expository and informative skills, innovative ideas, contributions and approaches, recognition and prestige at a national and international level and social commitment. The selection is based on the contributions of Adela Cortina in the Ethics field, specially applied to the economics and the business management through her works and ÉTNOR Foundation membership. Her contributions to the moral philosophy field, suggesting a business ethics committed to the creation of a fair society, deserve credit and recognition. 

Adela Cortina is graduated in Philosophy and Literature at the Universitat de València. In 1976 she defended her doctoral thesis about ‘Dios en la filosofía trascendental kantiana’ (God in Kantian transcendental philosophy). A research grant allowed her to frequent the University of Munich, where she came into contact with critical rationalism, pragmatism and Marxist ethics, and more specifically, with the philosophy of Jürgen Habermas and Karl-Otto Apel.

When she returned to academic activity in Spain, she definitely directed her research interests towards ethics. In 1981 she joined the Department of Practical Philosophy of the Universitat de València. In 1986 she obtained the Chair in Moral Philosophy. Her work has also focused on questions concerning economy, business, woman discrimination, war, ecology or genetics. Thanks to her work ‘Ética de la razón cordial’ (Ethics of Friendly Reason), she won the Jovellanos International Essay Prize in 2007.
