Adela Cortina receives the philosophy international award Karl-Otto Apel

Adela Cortina, full university professor of Ethics at the University of Valencia, was awarded on Saturday September 14th with the philosophy international price Karl-Otto Apel. During the session, held in the province of Costenza, Cortina gave a lecture entitled 'The Ethics of the reasons of the heart, and its German and Spanish roots'.

Karl-Otto Apel (Dusseldorf, 1922) is a German philosopher, professor at Kiel (1962-1969), Saarbrücken (1969-1972) and finally at the University of Frankfurt. He is specializing in language and communication, he is critical representative of the hermeneutics current. He is together with Jürgen Habermas one of the founders of the ethics in of the communication or discourse ethics.

Adela Cortina he studied philosophy and literature at the University of Valencia. In 1976, she defended her doctoral thesis on 'God in Kantian transcendental philosophy'.

A research grant enabled her to attend the University of Munich, where she became acquainted with critical rationalism, pragmatism, and Marxist ethics, and more specifically with the philosophy of Jürgen Habermas and Karl-Otto Apel. 

On returning to academic activities in Spain, she definitely focused her research interests towards ethics. In 1981 she joined the Department of Practical Philosophy at the University of Valencia. 

In 1986 she became full university professor of Moral Philosophy. Her works has also focused on issues relating to the economy, business, discrimination against women, war, ecology and genetics.

With his book "Ethics of the cordial reason 'was the winner of the Jovellanos International Essay Prize 2007.
