The Adler Planetarium in Chicago has broadcasted the videos of Astronomy produced in the Observatory of the University of Valencia. The ten videos, of a minute long, raise and answer basic and usual questions about the Universe. They have been made by members of the Observatory in collaboration with CSIC astronomers and financed by the Spanish Society of Astronomy.
The social networks have become essential for the science disclosure. The astronomers of the Astronomic Observatory of the University of Valencia know it well, and that is why they have made ten short videos which present ten big questions about the current Astronomy, and they have uploaded them to Youtube. It is the series “The Universe in a minute: Ten key questions about Astronomy and Cosmology”. Each video answers each question, for instance, “Is there life on other planets?”, “What is a supernova?”, or “Do black holes exist?”. They use real astronomical images of a very high resolution and animations made expressly for the series.
In Chicago, the Adler Planetarium began its exhibition “My Galaxy is your Galaxy”, an act aimed specifically at the Spanish-speaking community of the city. The exhibition sought to strengthen the relationship of this significant community with the Planetarium, to provide models for their young people, and to show them the possibility to enjoy science and practice also their own language. For this aim, they have compiled graphic and video-graphic materials of high quality in Spanish, and they have requested the Observatory for permission to use the videos of the series “The Universe in a minute”.
The Adler Planetarium in Chicago opened its doors to the public in 1930, and it became the first planetarium in America, only seven years after the opening of the first in the world in the German city of Munich.
The documentaries have been made under the scientific direction of the Full University Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics Vicent J. Martínez, with the completion of the video-graphic producer Javier Díez, scripts by the astronomers Fernando Ballesteros (head of instrumentation at the Observatory of the University of Valencia) and Alberto Fernández Soto) of the Institute of Physics in Cantabria, joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Cantabria), for the web http://www.conec.es of the COSCE, and have the support of the Astronomic Observatory of the University of Valencia, the Spanish Society of Physics, the IVICFA, the FECYT and of the Valencian Government.
The Youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/conecmag has had 58,000 visits.
