An exhibition at La Nau reviews 25 years of Erasmus programme

Universitat de València’s La Nau cultural centre hosts the exhibition titled ‘Experiència Erasmus 25 anys/veus’. This showing celebrates 25 years of the programme and is trying to make people think about the social, cultural, and academic impact this programme has had on the universities taking part in VLC/Campus.

From 1987, about 29,000 Valencian students (the so called, outgoing students) have taken part in the Erasmus programme in order to carry on their studies in a European university. Similarly, more than 34,000 European students (incoming students) have come to any of the centres in VLC/CAMPUS, that means, that 34,000 European students have studied at Universitat de València and Universitat Politècnica de València. The VLC/CAMPUS’ contribution of outgoing and incoming Erasmus students is similar to the contribution of Norway and Denmark respectively.

The exhibition offers all data related to 25 years of Erasmus experience, and six screens show the words of 25 professionals who have taken part in the programme.

This year, 2012, the Erasmus programme is been running for 25 years. It was born in 1987 as a way to promote student exchanges among European universities. It was only aimed at students, but from 1997, lecturers could participate as well. Since 2007, it is also possible to carry out company internships under the programme. Through these 25 years of existence, about 3 million students have benefitted from the programme. Next year 2012-2013, 250,000 students are estimated to take part in it.

The experience seems to be highly rewarding, since 89% of Erasmus students considers his/her academic experience as excellent or very good, and 96% thinks it will be useful for his/her future.

But the Erasmus experience goes beyond the academic area. It has become a personal and cultural experience which marks the life of the students to the extent that according to some experts ‘the process of “Europeanisation” would have been impossible without Eramus students.’

‘Escena Erasmus’ theatre company

Yesterday, the theatre workshop Escena Erasmus of Universitat de València acted at 19:30. Escena Erasmus is a pioneer project in Europe which promotes the involvement of Erasmus students in the cultural life of Valencia, and is supported by other institutions through the Red Europea de Teatro Erasmus.

Escena Erasmus was awarded the European Parliament’s prize Premio Carlomagno de la Juventud because it is an initiative boosted by young people promoting a shared feeling of European identity. The performance is taking place in La Nau’s Sala Matilde Salvador. The entrance is free but invitation is required. It must be picked up at the building’s reception.
