
The Valencian Cartographic Institute has delivered this morning The Prize of Cartography and Territory Pare Tosca, created with the aim of stimulating technical creation, ingenuity and effort in carrying out final projects or research projects on 3D mapping, remote sensing and spatial planning in the universities of the Valencian Country. The prize winner, who will perform a six month internship in the ICV, submitted to contest his final work for the Master's degree in Remote Sensing of the University of Valencia. The principal of the University of Valencia, Esteban Morcillo, has awarded the prize to Alfonso Moya, author of the project "Automatic detection of new buildings from the ICV orthophotos."
They have also recognised the work of Alejandro Soria Poso "precise point positioning (PPP): a technique for the future. Analysis of the innovative technique of GNSSPPP positioning for obtaining real-time data in the territory and forestry applications and "Coast Ordering of the Marina and Pinet (Elx) following the recovery of the waterfront" by Maria Jose Garcia.
During his speech, the president Esteban Morcillo has emphasized the importance of "encouraging and recognising the work of the young, especially in difficult times like these".
Addressing the award recipients, the president has said that "in this time of deep economic and social crisis, you are the present but above all, you are the future of this territory."
Regarding the works recognised with the award, Esteban Morcillo said "they are an example of application of science to the everyday reality."
The principal, who stressed the role of tutors and teachers of the awarded students, recalled the role of the University of Valencia in the city. "We are a university whose campus is the streets of Valencia, we have no boundaries and contribute to civil and historical architecture of this city."
This award is a tribute to the famous mathematician, architect, philosopher, religious and cartographer Tomás Vicente Tosca Masco (1651-1723), better known as Pare Tosca, which was one of the first Valencian enlightened thinkers and is well known for its famous plan of the city of Valencia in 1704.
Pare Tosca's map of the City of Valencia in 1704, whose trace is a compendium of technical and mathematical knowledge, is one of the most outstanding landmarks of historical cartography of Valencia.
