The Governing Council has approved on the 29 October the Second Plan for Equality of the University of Valencia, which has 74 actions to be developed during five years (2013-2017). The aim of the initiative is to ensure the real and effective equality between women and men in the academic institution. The document has been negotiated by CCOO, CGT, STE-PV and UGT in the Negotiating Table, and has been unanimously approved in the Commission for Equality Policies of the University.
The Plan has been presented before the Governing Council by Carmen Tomás, director of the Equality Unit of the University of Valencia.
The principle of equality is one of the values of the University of Valencia, according with its Statutes. Nevertheless, the last diagnosis on the situation of women and men in the University, developed by professor Fàtima Perelló, from the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, shows that there are still gender asymmetries among the students, as well as between the Teaching and Research Staff (PDI) and the Administrative and Service Staff (PAS).
According to the data collected by the diagnosis, which was the basis for the plan development, the presence of women in the knowledge areas of Health Sciences and Arts and Humanities remains majority and, on the other hand, it shows that the presence of men in the area of Engineering remains the same, which contributes to a horizontal segregation in all the educative levels offered by the University.
Regarding the PDI, women’s presence is concentrated in certain knowledge areas and certain professional categories, which are the less elevated in the academic rank. This way the vertical segregation remains. In regard of the PAS, women’s pre-eminence must not be confused with the absence of gender inequalities, as it is the increased presence of men in the highest category (A) and the overrepresentation of women in a lower category (C).
With this new Plan for Equality, the University keeps its engagement with the equality policies and takes a step forward as it is evident in the first axis: Participation and Government. An axis that focuses on governance in favour of the equality of women and men as the basic principle and identifier of all the actions described in the Plan.
The Plan, which has been elaborated from the First Plan evaluation report and the diagnosis report “Asimetrías de género a la Universidad” (“Gender Asymmetries at the University”), will focus on five main axis: ‘Participation and government’, ‘Diagnosis and visibility’, ‘Creation of a culture for equality’, ‘Work-related aspects’ and ‘Research and teaching’.
